Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, known as Moose Wala Sidhu, was shot dead by unknown people on Sunday night while traveling in Mansa State District. hi 28.

The other two were injured in the attack.

The assassinations led to a political storm in the state, with opposition leaders criticizing the government and police.

State police chief VK Bhawra had said on Sunday that a Canada-based gangster had claimed responsibility for the attack.

But Moose's family did not apologize to Mr. Bhawr for associating death with gang fighting without proper investigation.

Mr Bhawra said in a statement on Monday that he had not said Moose Wala was a "gangster or gangster employee."

"Goldy Brar has claimed responsibility for the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The investigation will address all aspects of the murder," he said, adding that he was "wrong when quoting" some media.

Punjab Prime Minister Bhagwan Manna has ordered an investigation - led by a Supreme Court judge - into the incident. Opposition leaders asked why the singer's security coverage had been reduced.

Police said Moose's security detail was not reduced to two commandos of four and that these officers did not travel with the singer when he was attacked.

He is one of more than 400 people in the Punjab whose security details have recently been withdrawn or curtailed by the government.

His death shocked fans across the country and abroad, especially Canada, which has a sizeable Punjabi diaspora population. Social media was flooded with tributes, with many demanding justice for Moose Wala.

He contested the state assembly election earlier this year as a Congress candidate but lost.
