Turkish sharpshooter Yusuf Dikeç wins silver at Paris Olympics with minimal gear, becomes internet sensation

 

Aug. 2, CHATEAUROUX, France (Reuters) Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec has drawn notice on social media for his easygoing approach at the shooting range at the Paris Olympics.

Alongside Sevval Ilayda Tarhan, Dikec, a former Turkish Gendarmerie officer, took home a silver medal in the mixed team 10-meter air pistol competition on Tuesday. The 51-year-old's carefree attitude during the tournament at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre, however, was what truly grabbed the attention of online users. He took the picture while wearing casual attire, one hand in his pocket, which caused a wave of memes to come out.

Even on X (previously Twitter), the French embassy in Turkey commented, stating, "Be cool like Yusuf Dikec."

Dikec wore his standard glasses and a yellow earplug as his only ear protection, unlike most shooters who wore visors, cumbersome ear protection, and specialized lenses to concentrate. His distinctive charm was enhanced by his casual jersey, piercing gaze, and silver hair. His casual charm extended to his practice of shooting with one hand in his pocket.

Dikec has not replied to Reuters's attempts to contact him regarding his recent notoriety while he is back in Turkey. Tarhan, a 24-year-old teammate, feels that Dikec's notoriety is justified. 

"I'm happy for him," Tarhan said to Reuters. However, it's not as though he is unequipped. He doesn't require any additional equipment because he's used to shooting with standard glasses. He feels comfortable with his choice, which is particular to him.

Since making his Olympic debut in Beijing 2008, Dikec has participated in every Olympics, so he is adjusting to the limelight. Tarhan called him "cool," but he was also incredibly friendly. She stated, "He's friendly and fun to joke around with." "I'm glad to see him receiving this acknowledgement."

Raducanu knocked out of Wimbledon by qualifier Sun

Emma Raducanu's Wimbledon journey came to an end after a hard-fought match against New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun. The British wildcard, aged 21, lost 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in a dramatic match on Centre Court.

Raducanu had shown resilience by leveling the match after a strong performance from Sun, who played inspired tennis. However, Raducanu's momentum was interrupted when she slipped on the baseline early in the deciding set. She received medical treatment on her leg and back while on the court, indicating she had been dealing with a stiff back since the previous day.

Despite the setback, Raducanu bravely continued, receiving cheers of support from the crowd. Her movement improved during points, although she struggled with her serve and was broken twice in the final set. Sun eventually closed out the match on her second match point.

This loss means Raducanu, currently ranked 135th in the world, misses out on reaching her first Wimbledon quarter-finals. It also marks the end of British representation in the singles draws at this year's tournament.

Reflecting on the match, Raducanu acknowledged Sun's strong play, admitting, "I gave my best, I fought really hard. Her tennis was better and she deserved the win."

Raducanu's defeat comes shortly after she withdrew from mixed doubles due to stiffness in her right wrist, a precautionary measure following surgery last year on the same wrist. Despite the setback, she had been enjoying a successful run in the grass-court season, showcasing some of her best tennis since winning the US Open.

As for Lulu Sun, the left-hander's Cinderella story continues at Wimbledon. Having never won a main-draw match at a Grand Slam until now, she has made a remarkable breakthrough. Sun's powerful game, including a strong serve and confident net play, has been the key to her success.

Sun will now face Croatia's Donna Vekic in the quarter-finals, aiming to extend her fairy-tale run at the All England Club.
